About David Simmer
I became interested in photography at a young age, but more especially while serving in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1971. Seeing the beautiful sky while at sea was an inspiration for me to capture images mostly using a 35 mm camera and slide film. When possible I took photographs of everything from shooting during combat operations in and off of the coast of Vietnam, to the rescuing of victims of a ship sinking in the Sea of Japan. In about 1968, I purchased my first darkroom equipment while one of my four ships visited Hong Kong. After getting home, I started photographing my children and printing in the bathroom that became my darkroom. It was not long and I was photographing many other children and family members. After leaving the navy and moving to Central Washington State, I began hiking in the mountains and taking more slide images. In the late 1980s, I purchased a Hasselblad camera and carried it into the mountains. I am mostly self taught by studying the works of great photographers such as Ansel Adams. I love black and white photography but color has a place in my heart also. I have photographed many weddings and portraits with my son John at our studio in Cashmere, Washington, but my first love is still landscapes and nature. I have recently embraced digital photography and early in 2013 purchased a digital back for my Hasselblad and am looking forward to capturing images with it.
